A fireplace damper gets stuck for one of four reasons: rust has seized the hinge or the handle track, creosote and soot have built up until the plate jams, the metal plate has warped from heat and no longer seats in its frame, or something mechanical has broken: a pin, a bracket, the handle, or a chain on a top-sealing damper. In Seattle-area homes the first cause is the most common, because the damper sits right where rain coming down the flue lands, and our wet season runs from October through March, which is exactly when the fireplace is in use.
The fix depends on the cause. A damper jammed by soot and creosote is freed during a chimney sweep. A rusted or warped throat damper is usually repaired by cleaning and freeing the mechanism, replacing the broken part, or, when the plate is too far gone, replacing the throat damper with a top-sealing damper at the top of the flue. First, which kind of damper do you have?
There are two common types, and the symptoms and fixes are different.
Throat damper
This is the cast-iron or steel plate just above the firebox, operated by a handle, a lever, or a rotating knob on the face of the fireplace. Nearly every masonry fireplace built in Seattle, Tacoma, Shoreline and Edmonds before the 1980s has one. It lives in the hottest, wettest part of the system, so it rusts, warps and collects creosote.
Top-sealing damper
This sits at the top of the flue and is operated by a steel cable running down to a handle in the firebox. The plate seals against a rubber gasket, so it closes much tighter than a throat damper. Top-sealing dampers are a common replacement when a throat damper has failed. When they fail it is usually the cable, the handle bracket, or a gasket that has hardened.
Prefab (factory-built) fireplaces have a lighter sheet-metal damper built into the unit. Those parts are specific to the manufacturer, and repair means matching the part to the model.
Damper stuck closed
A damper stuck shut is the one people discover at the worst time: the fire is lit and smoke rolls into the room. Put the fire out, open windows, and do not keep trying to force the handle with a fire burning.
Common causes:
- Rust. The plate has rusted to the frame or the hinge pin is seized. Rust flakes on the smoke shelf and an orange stain in the firebox are the tell.
- Creosote glue. Tarry creosote on the plate edges and the frame has hardened. Very common in fireplaces that have not been swept in several seasons.
- Debris on the plate. A nest, leaves, or pieces of a failing flue liner or crown resting on top of the damper. If the chimney has no cap, this happens a lot.
- Warped plate. A plate that has warped from heat binds in the frame and will not rotate.
Do not hammer on the handle. A seized cast-iron damper can crack, and a cracked plate means replacement rather than repair.
Damper stuck open
A damper stuck open is quieter but costs money every day. An open flue pulls heated air out of the house all winter and lets cold air, rain and the smell of the chimney come down. You may notice a cold draft from the fireplace, a damp or smoky odor in the room, or higher heating bills.
Causes are mostly the same list: rust, creosote, a warped plate, or a broken part. With a top-sealing damper, a stuck-open damper usually means the cable has snapped or slipped its bracket, so there is nothing pulling the lid closed.
Damper handle moves but nothing happens
If the handle swings freely with no resistance, the linkage has come apart. On a throat damper that is typically the pin that connects the handle arm to the plate, or the plate has dropped off its hinges and is lying on the smoke shelf. On a top-sealing damper it is the cable. On a prefab unit it can be a sheared rivet or a bent control rod.
Damper closes but does not seal
This is the most common damper problem we find in older Seattle homes, and many homeowners never notice it. The plate moves, but it is warped, pitted, or the frame is rusted, so there is a gap all the way around. You are heating the outdoors through that gap. You can check this on a cold day by closing the damper and holding a hand in the firebox; if you feel a steady cold draft, the damper is not sealing. Throat dampers were never airtight even when new, which is why a top-sealing damper is such a common upgrade.
How we fix a stuck or broken damper
Step one: clean it and find out what is actually wrong
We start by clearing the soot, creosote and rust from the plate, frame and smoke shelf. A good share of "broken" dampers are simply jammed, and they work again once the mechanism is clean and lubricated with a high-temperature lubricant. If the fireplace has not been swept recently, this is done as part of the sweep and inspection, which starts at $299.
Step two: repair what can be repaired
Seized hinge pins are freed or replaced. Bent handles and arms are straightened or replaced. Plates that have dropped off their hinges are reset. On a top-sealing damper we replace the cable, bracket or gasket.
Step three: replace when repair will not hold
A plate that is badly warped, cracked, or rusted through is not worth repairing. The options are a replacement throat damper, if the frame is sound and a matching unit is available, or a top-sealing damper installed at the top of the flue. For most older masonry chimneys we recommend the top-sealing damper: it seals tighter, it keeps rain and animals out of the flue, and it takes the mechanism out of the wettest, hottest part of the chimney. The top-of-flue work is part of the job and we handle it.
Step four: deal with the cause
If rain was rusting the damper, the chimney needs a working chimney cap. If creosote glued it shut, the fireplace needs regular sweeping. If debris from a crumbling flue or crown was sitting on the plate, that is a bigger problem than the damper, and it is the reason we recommend a chimney inspection whenever we find a damper failure with no obvious cause. NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection for chimneys in use.
Why dampers fail faster around Puget Sound
Seattle's NOAA 1991–2020 normal is 40.34 inches of rain a year, with about 44 percent of it falling in November, December and January. An uncapped flue funnels that rain straight onto the damper plate, and an iron plate that is wet for five months a year rusts. Winter lows average around 37°F at Sea-Tac, so the smoke shelf is often damp and above freezing, which is a good environment for rust and for creosote to stay tacky. That combination is why we see far more seized dampers here than in drier climates, and why a cap is the single best thing you can do for a damper's lifespan.
Gas fireplaces: a different rule
If you have a gas log set in a masonry fireplace, the damper is usually fixed permanently open with a clamp so exhaust can never be trapped. Do not remove that clamp and do not try to close the damper. If you smell gas anywhere near a fireplace, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. We do not describe or recommend any homeowner work on gas valves or pilots.

Can I use my fireplace if the damper is stuck open?
Yes, a damper stuck open does not stop the fireplace from venting. The problem is that the flue stays open when there is no fire, pulling heated air out of the house and letting rain and cold air in. Have it repaired before winter heating bills add up.
Can I use my fireplace if the damper is stuck closed?
No. A closed damper sends smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. Do not light a fire until the damper is opened and working, and do not force a seized handle with a fire burning.
