Between the damper and the bottom of the flue sits the smoke chamber: a pyramid-shaped space that funnels smoke from the wide firebox into the narrow flue. In most masonry fireplaces it is built of brick stepped inward, called corbeling, and every one of those steps is a small shelf facing the rising smoke. Creosote lands on them, thickens, and stays, because a round flue brush pushed down from the top or up from the firebox slides straight past the chamber's sloped, stepped walls without touching most of them.
That is why a fireplace can have a freshly swept flue and still smoke, smell, and carry a real fire risk. This page is only about cleaning the smoke chamber. How It Works
Our chimney smoke chamber cleaning process
We look at the chamber from below with a light and mirror, and from above with the camera when we scope the flue. We are judging two things: how much creosote is on the steps and walls, and what the chamber is built like underneath it. A chamber with sharp corbeled steps and open mortar joints will keep collecting creosote no matter how well it is cleaned, and a chamber with gaps or missing mortar is a path for heat and sparks into the framing around the chimney. So the cleaning is also the assessment for smoke chamber parging, the process of coating the chamber smooth with refractory mortar, and we tell you honestly whether yours would benefit from it.
Contain the firebox
Drop cloths, a sealed opening and a HEPA vacuum running throughout, because chamber cleaning loosens material that falls straight into the firebox.
Open the damper and clear the shelf
The damper is opened fully, or removed where the design allows, and the smoke shelf behind it is cleared so we have room to work upward.
Clean the corbeled steps
Each ledge is scraped and brushed with angled and flexible tools that follow the slope, working from the damper up to the throat of the flue.
Clean the chamber walls
The sloped faces between the steps are brushed or rotary-cleaned with heads that conform to the taper, not a straight flue brush.
Vacuum and re-check
Everything that came down is extracted, and we re-examine the chamber with a light to confirm the steps are clean and to document the condition of the mortar.
Advise on parging
If the chamber is rough, stepped or has open joints, we explain why parging would improve draft and reduce future buildup, and quote it separately.

Repair and service options
Smoke chamber cleaning is quoted after we see the chamber, because how much is on the steps and how the chamber is built both matter. It can include:
- Chamber cleaning added to a sweep: the most common booking. The flue is swept and the chamber is cleaned on the same visit, with the sweep-and-inspection portion starting at $299.
- Stand-alone chamber cleaning: when the flue is already clean but the chamber was skipped.
- Glaze treatment in the chamber: hard, shiny glaze on the steps is treated with a chemical modifier before mechanical removal, using the approach on our stage 3 creosote page.
- Smoke chamber parging: after cleaning, coating the chamber smooth with refractory mortar so smoke flows cleanly and creosote has nowhere to lodge. Quoted separately.
- Damper service: a damper that must be removed to reach the chamber is cleaned and re-seated, and repaired if needed under chimney damper repair.

Safety considerations
The smoke chamber sits closer to the house framing than any other part of the chimney, so creosote burning there is creosote burning next to wood. A chamber with thick deposits and open mortar joints is the combination we most want out of a house. Until the chamber has been cleaned, keep fires small and the damper fully open, and if you have had any rumbling, roaring or a puff of smoke and sparks from the fireplace, stop using it and call us. Our certified and insured crew does the chamber work from the firebox and any top-side work from the roof; neither is a homeowner job.
NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection of the full system, and the smoke chamber is one of the parts a good inspection specifically examines.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Smoke chambers collect more creosote here because Puget Sound fires are slow and cool. Firewood that sits through roughly 150–156 rainy days a year burns damp, and damp wood makes heavy, cool smoke that condenses on the first cool surface it meets, which is the chamber just above the firebox. Exterior brick chimneys start every evening near winter lows that average around 37°F in December and January, so the chamber is cold when the fire is lit.
The region's older masonry fireplaces, in Tacoma (median year built 1967), Shoreline (1969) and Seattle (1976), were mostly built with corbeled brick chambers that were never parged, which is why a flue-only sweep so often leaves the dirtiest part of those chimneys untouched.

What is the smoke chamber and why does it need its own cleaning?
It is the funnel-shaped space between the damper and the flue that narrows the wide firebox down to the flue opening. In most masonry fireplaces it is built of brick stepped inward, and every step is a ledge facing the smoke. A round flue brush slides past those sloped, stepped walls, so the chamber needs angled tools and hand work. Skip it and the dirtiest part of the chimney stays dirty.
My chimney was just swept. Could the smoke chamber still be dirty?
Yes, and it is a common reason a freshly swept fireplace still smokes or smells. Many sweeps clean the flue only. If the service did not specifically mention the chamber, assume it was not cleaned. We can look at it with a light from the firebox, tell you what is on the steps, and clean it on the same visit if it needs it.
Does smoke chamber cleaning improve draft?
Often noticeably. Creosote on the chamber steps roughens and narrows the path smoke takes into the flue, and a rough, narrow path slows the smoke and lets it spill back into the room. Cleaning restores the chamber's shape; parging it smooth afterward improves draft further and gives creosote nowhere to lodge. We explain which of those your chimney needs.
What is smoke chamber parging, and do I need it?
Parging is coating the inside of the chamber with refractory mortar so the stepped brick becomes a smooth, sloped funnel. It seals open joints, improves draft and sharply reduces how much creosote the chamber collects. Not every chamber needs it; a chamber with small, tight steps and sound mortar may be fine with cleaning alone. We assess it during cleaning and quote it separately if we recommend it.
Can you remove glazed creosote from the smoke chamber?
Usually, with a chemical modifier applied to the glaze followed by mechanical removal, the same approach we use for a glazed flue. Glaze on corbeled steps can take more than one treatment. Is this included in a standard chimney sweep?
A routine sweep includes a check of the chamber and light brushing where a brush can reach, but a chamber with real buildup on its steps is an added service because it takes different tools and more time. We tell you before we start whether your chamber needs the added cleaning, quote it, and do both on the same visit when you approve.
